Punjab take on Hyderabad still looking for the first win of the season. Hyderabad are also in a similar state as the team are finding it difficult to shake off a poor start. Punjab will take a lot of positives from the recent performance against Mumbai City that could have yielded the first win of the season.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad were quite mediocre in their home draw against Bengaluru. Now, Hyderabad are preparing for a run of four away matches in the next five ISL games.
This will be the first meeting between Punjab and Hyderabad in the ISL.
Reasons to be cheerful
• Punjab starting to look good in patches
• The club have scored in three of the last four games
Reasons to be fearful
• Punjab are still among the lowest scorers in the league
• There is enough reason to be defensively worried after seven goals conceded in the last two matches
Punjab almost looked like being on the verge of a first win of the season before a late collapse against Mumbai City. There were plenty of positives for Staikos Vergetis from the first half of this match, but it was equally spoiled by a disappointing second half.
Yet, Punjab will have little reason to come up with the excuse for shipping two goals in the space of a minute against Mumbai City. The result has left Punjab at the bottom of the table with the team only managing two points from the six matches so far.
Star man – Luka Majcen
Luka Majcen scored his second goal of the campaign in the loss against Mumbai City. This was the first goal for the 34-year-old since scoring against Mohun Bagan towards the end of September. However, he had a positive first half which will give him confidence coming into the match.
Reasons to be cheerful
• Not too many defensive mistakes of late
• Hyderabad have scored in back-to-back games
Reasons to be fearful
• Hyderabad’s offence still looks woefully short of confidence
• Hyderabad are the worst offensive team in the division
Hyderabad continue to struggle for goals and opportunities in the final third. As a result, they are still without a victory in the Indian Super League 2023-24 season. The lack of goals has put Hyderabad near the bottom but they have been able to climb above their nearest rivals – Punjab FC – after the recent point against Bengaluru.
Coach Thangboi Singto is likely to make a couple of changes to the team but there are no major injury problems for Hyderabad. Ahead of a difficult run of games, Hyderabad will be keen on getting that first victory out of the way.
Star man – Jonathan Moya
Jonathan Moya had some interesting opportunities, especially in the second half against Bengaluru. The 31-year-old striker clearly lacks some confidence in the final third, but he is likely to be retained in the starting line-up for the upcoming game.
Hyderabad are unbeaten in the last two matches and they have been relatively decent in patches. However, Punjab come into the game on the back of consecutive losses but they have looked much better in certain situations.
Punjab also have the home advantage that is likely to count significantly in this game. In the past, Punjab have not suffered too many home defeats. Meanwhile, Hyderabad’s last away success in the ISL was in January 2023.
