There are some trees which flower once in a year, but then their blossom brings a lot of delight. Gujarat Fortune Giants and Puneri Paltan are prime examples of a late blossom. Both these teams looked listless and ordinary almost throughout the season. Languishing in the lower half of the points table, they didn’t bother a lot of teams. But since the last few weeks, both these teams have become giant killers and have moved to the middle of the points table thus enhancing their prospects for the next stage. The Paltan has won 4 out of their last 5 games and the Fortune Giants have won 3 out of their last 5. This will be the clash of the month as both teams need to win desperately. The Puneri Paltan beat the Telegu Titans in their last game while the Fortune Giants got the better of UP Yodha yesterday. Gujarat will be playing the 2nd match in 2 days. The Paltan has a slight advantage as they have got their raiders and defenders resonating which makes it difficult for the opposition. Gujarat needs to win this game to keep alive their prospects for the next stage.
One could call them the most exciting team to watch on the mat. When they’re in form, they are unstoppable. Starting slow in games, they take charge as the match reaches the half time mark. Inflicting all outs and scoring super raids, their players show a different avatar once they settle down. Post their recovery from covid, the Fortune Giants are following a different lifestyle on the mat. They introduced raider Pradeep Kumar who hammered the opposition into submission. Thus the Fortune Giants have moved up the points table quietly. They are placed 6th in the points table after 19 games. With 2 more games to go, they need to win both in order to squeeze into the knock out stage. They beat the UP Yodha by 7 points yesterday and take on the Puneri Paltan next. It was their defence which blew the lid off UP Yodha with 15 tackle points. Though raiders Ajay, Rakesh and Mahendra Rajput earned well, this may not be enough against the Puneri Paltan.
The Fortune Giants are working on a new model, letting their raiders attack very early. They used 4 raiders in the last game and that plan achieved the desired results. The Fortune Giants have conceded 21 all-outs in 19 games while inflicting only 17 which is the lowest among all teams. Their performance in DoD is also not too great with 62 points from 19 games. They tend to depend too much on raider Mahendra Rajput in DoD situations. They have introduced Iranians Hadi Osterack and Suleman Pahelvani in the last few games and it has worked wonders. They will need to be at their best against the Paltan which looks in ominous form with raiders like Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat in top gear.
Puneri Paltan’s are students who enjoy the whole semester and then look for the syllabus as the exams approach. They seemed to have peaked at the right time as they have been winning matches consistently. They have won 4 out of their last 5 games and have moved to the 8th position in the points table. They have an outside chance to make it to the play-off as they have 3 more games to play. After the initial struggle due to multiple reasons, the Paltan has found solace in the fact that teamwork will get them through. Their raiding has become ferocious and their defence impregnable. They beat top sides like U Mumba, Haryana Steelers and UP Yodha. Raiders Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat have become lethal and unstoppable. Even though Aslam lost one of his teeth in action, he seems unperturbed and has been contributing in the defence too. Some of this ankle holds have been brutal.
Veteran Nitin Tomar gives a lot of sensibility and stability to the raiding department. Defenders Sombir and Abhinesh have improved their consistency in the last few games. This has rubbed on to left corner Vishal Bharadwaj who earned 6 points in his last game. The Puneri Paltan beat the Fortune Giants by 7 points in their last meeting earlier in January 2022. But that was due to the earnings from raids rather than savings from the defence. With 3 more games, the Paltan can dream of making a back door entry into the next stage. They play the Tamil Thalaivas next which is a blessing in disguise for them. The Paltan has to be careful of the Fortune Giants as they have displayed some aggressive moves, especially by raider Pradeep Kumar. Aslam and Mohit Goyat look in top form, but it will all depend on how the Puneri defence hunts the Fortune Giant raiders.
Both the teams are in great form and equally matched. While the Fortune Giants have a team of Ajay, Rakesh, Pradeep Kumar and Rakesh Narwal in their raiding, the Paltan has Aslam, Mohit Goyat, Nitin Tomar and Rahul Chaudhary in their arsenal. While the Fortune Giants boast of defenders like Girish Ernak and Hadi Osterack, the Paltan has Abhinesh and Sombir. Though Pune looks a bit better in terms of consistency in their last few games, both teams are subject to sudden breakdowns and brain fades. Gujarat beat the UP Yodha yesterday in a convincing manner. Both teams need to win their remaining games to stay in the hunt for the next stage, though Puneri Paltan has one extra game at their disposal. This will be a face-off between the raiders of both teams. But the difference will be made by the defence!!!! Expect lots of fireworks and rough moves.
Puneri Paltan will win.
