A once mercurial U Mumba takes on the ever consistent UP Yodha in the second bout of the first day of a new season. UP Yodha were in top form last season only to falter in the knockouts as they finished 4th with 12 victories. U Mumba were slow to start as they followed a defense heavy strategy last season.
Pardeep Narwal captured the imagination of all kabaddi fans in his debut season itself and has continued to perform sensationally every season. He is capable of decimating any opposition on any given day, and that is the way UP Yodha will approach this season.
But the journey has not been very sweet for former champions U Mumba as they failed to maintain the intensity through season 9. Without their leader Fazel Attracali, Mumba looked a pale shadow of their past. But with an Iranian coach and a bunch of youngsters, U Mumba is ready to rock the season. Coach Gholamreza will have his task cut out as he will need to mix tactics as they take on the Yodha’s.
Pardeep Narwal had a slow start last year but he forged a sensational partnership with raider Surender Gill as they earned 360 raid points between them. They have the support of defenders like Nitesh Kumar and Sumit while all-rounder Vijay Malik can be the surprise package. He was the top buy for UP Yodha in the auctions.
Former Champions U Mumba have hit a rough patch in the PKL since season 2. They had the mercurial Fazel Attrachali along with some maverick youngsters who displayed a unique brand of kabaddi. Off-late Mumba seems to have forgotten that style. Neither they have big names nor have they been able to deceive their opponents.
Season 10 will be a test of their aptitude as well as their attitude on the mat. Mumba invested heavily in young raiders during the auctions. Almost 50% of their squad is raiders which clearly indicates their modus-operandi this season. Iranian coach Gholamreza Mazandarani will go all guns blazing. They bought raider Guman Singh at 85 lakh's during the auctions. Guman Singh and Jai Bhagwan form the backbone of U Mumba as both had a decent season last year. Guman Singh earned 137 raid points from 18 games while Jai Bhagwan got 75 raid points from 19 matches.
U Mumba tried a unique strategy last season which backfired drastically. They cooked each match on a slow burner, neither attacking relentlessly nor defending fiercely. They conceded the least points last season and still finished 9th.
This year Mumba has roped in young raiders like Shivam, Sachin, Pranav Rane, Rupesh apart from Iranians Heiderali Ikrami and Alireza Mirzaeian. These youngsters will be tested against the strong UP defense. Their trump cards in the defense will be left corner Girish Ernak and defender Sombir. Right corner Rinku Singh exhibited some daring moves last season and this trio will be the key to the Mumba defense.
U Mumba has the tendency to start a snail’s pace every season. But season 10 could usher them into the limelight from the very first game. Beating the Yodha’s in their first encounter will be a big statement from U Mumba.
The Yodha’s were top contenders of season 9. They had a wonderful run through the season as the deadly duo of Pardeep Narwal and Surinder Gill toppled every defense that challenged them. Pardeep Narwal scored 220 raid point from 22 games thus establishing himself as one of the greatest players in PKL.
Former PKL stalwart Jasvir Singh will be at the helm of affairs as their coach. He is known for nurturing young talent which can help the Yodha’s produce new heroes for season 10. The UP Yodha has a wonderful mix of raiders, defenders and all-rounders. They have included specialists like right raider Gangana Gowda and left raider Shivam Chaudhary. The Yodha’s also have added a twist to their team with Kenyan all-rounders Helvic Wanjala and Samuel Wafula.
Though UP Yodha dominated most of their opponents, they have had a mixed record against U Mumba. Mumba has beaten them 4 times out their 10 encounters. Both teams played out a tie in season 8. Hence the Yodha’s will be vary of these numbers as they take on a tricky opponent. One of the most crucial aspect for Pardeep Narwal will be to avoid being predictable. He was decoded by most of the teams in the last season which forced him to play second fiddle to Surender Gill. Though Pardeep bounced back in style by the end of the season, the Yodha’s did struggle briefly.
UP will rely on their strong defense which proved impregnable last season. They executed 22 Super tackles apart from inflicted 37 all-outs in the season. The Yodha’s accumulated 854 points in season 9 and they averaged about 22 raid points in each game. This will be a tough start to the season for UP Yodha as they will have to take on a new U Mumba team.
UP Yodha will be entering the mat with a bit of anxiety. Though they have one of the strongest defense among all teams, they will face an unpredictable U Mumba which has a lot of young raiders in their squad.
Pardeep Narwal and Surinder Gill will exploit the fragile Mumba defense, though they have to be vary of left corner Girish Ernak. UP will rely on their strong defense which includes Sumit and Nitesh Kumar who have been consistent for the past few seasons. They may trick their opponents with the use of specialist right and left raiders. UP Yodha start slowly and may pick up pace in the second half. The Yodha's may use all-rounder Vijay Malik instead of raider Surender Gill.
U Mumba will go all-out in their opening game as they need to set the trend. They will attack with all their might so as to trouble the UP defense. Left corner Maruti Ernak will attack Pardeep Narwal and attempt to keep him of the mat for long duration's. Mumba has to be careful that they should not lose track of the match with over-zealous attacking as it may backfire. It will be a tough and a low scoring game. Raiders Guman Singh and Jai Bhagwan may not earn too many raid points but they will be consistent. U Mumba will have to cut down on their unforced errors which may nullify their attacking tactics.
