This season has been more volatile than ever before as teams are battling it out on the mat and off the mat too.  The Pirates made a healthy comeback to the match after a brief encounter with Covid. It was a relief to see their squad fit and ready to play. But they stumbled upon Jaipur Pink Panthers and lost by a huge margin. This was one of their biggest losses this season which will serve as a wake-up call for all of them. The UP Yodha have also lost their way in the journey as they have lost 3 consecutive games. They looked very dynamic till they ran into Haryana Steelers. They not only lost to the Steelers but also to the Puneri Paltan and the Bengaluru Bulls. 

Patna Pirates and UP Yodha clashed last year on Christmas and set the mat on fire. UP beat the Pirates by 1 point in a point fest. Both teams have gone through a lot and they will be expected to throw some vicious raids at each other.

UP Yodha took a tangent mid tournament and regrouped. They won some unexpected games as they stunned bigger teams. It looked as if they had overcome their initial hiccups to find a lethal team combination. Star Pardeep Narwal started playing second fiddle to Surender Gill who has bulldozed opposition defenders. The UP defense started hunting efficiently and it looked as if the Yodha will overtake a lot of teams in the point table. But the Yodha broke down due to technical snags and they stopped cranking together. They have lost 3 consecutive games and this has placed them 6th in the points table after 15 games.

Surender Gill has earned 121 raid points in 14 games and he is the new super raider for the Yodha. He has been consistent and conducts some big raids. Though he has been neutralized in the last few games by the opposition, he has an uncanny knack of executing Super raids by sheer power. There have been times where he has pulled 2-3 defenders towards the mid line and knocked them out. 

Defenders Nitesh Kumar and Sumit are in the top 10, but they have lost the edge in the last few games with advanced unsuccessful tackles. This has resulted in the Yodha line up becoming vulnerable to all-outs very early in the match. 

UP Yodha have executed 247 successful raids out of their 631 team raids. They looked a bit out of sorts yesterday against the Bulls as they were not able to earn in raids as well as tackles. They will have to be careful about this aspect as they will be playing back to back games which will test their squad mentally and physically.

Patna Pirates Preview

The Pirates made a grand comeback after recovering from Covid. They slammed the Thalaiva’s and then they broke down in front of the Pink Panthers. None of their raiders were able to score a Super 10, while the Pink Panthers looted points at will to score 51 team points. This will be the area that the Pirates will have to work on priority.

They are placed 3rd in the points table after 13 games and fortunately have more matches than other teams where they can plan their recovery. The trio of Monu Goyat, Sachin Tanwar and Prashant Rai are potent enough while backup raiders like Ghuman Singh has also played a few games. But it is their defense which will have to upgrade itself to improve their consistency. None of them could trap the Pink Panthers in the last game which lead to a huge loss for the Pirates.

Patna Pirates have executed 142 successful team tackles earning 156 tackle points which also include 14 Super tackles. They need to forget the debacle in their last game and start hunting with pride and energy. 

The Pirates have 17 all-outs while conceding just 11 which is the lowest among all teams. This has been their strength and they will have to rediscover their hunting acumen. The Pirates have lost only 4 games out of the 13 that they have played and also have a good score difference. They have a great opportunity against the UP Yodha who have lost their last 3 games and look slightly out of sorts. But this will be a tight game for both, probably a repeat of their last years clash.
