How Does the IPL 2026 Points Table Work?
The IPL 2026 points system is straightforward. A win earns a team 2 points, a no-result or tied match earns 1 point each, and a loss - 0 points. Teams are ranked in descending order of points. When two or more teams are level on points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is used as the tiebreaker.
IPL 2026 uses a group-stage format with Group A (RCB, KKR, RR, CSK, PBKS) and Group B (SRH, DC, GT, MI, LSG). Each team plays all other teams in both groups across the 84-match league stage before the top 4 advance to the playoffs.
What Is NRR? Net Run Rate Explained
Net Run Rate is the primary tiebreaker in the IPL points table. It measures how quickly a team scores runs relative to how quickly they concede them, across all matches.
NRR = (Total runs scored ÷ Total overs faced) − (Total runs conceded ÷ Total overs bowled)
A positive NRR means a team is outscoring its opponents on average. A negative NRR means the opposite. In a close playoff race, NRR can be the difference between qualifying and going home — which is why teams sometimes chase aggressively even when the match result is already decided.
